My husband and I selected Barbara as our doula based on her very calm, comforting presence and extensive medical knowledge. Barbara was so helpful in developing our birth plan, her medical knowledge and experience were very useful.
I had an easy time leading up to delivery, and kept in touch with Barbara over the evening of what ended up being the start of labor. She was great at reassuring me I could stay home for quite some time, and gave me clear signs to look for as to when I should have her come over that night. About an hour after she arrived she could see my pains were getting more intense and suggested we head to the hospital.
Once there Barbara was a constant, calm, solid presence. She helped corral a flaky nurse to get initial check-in over with. During that time she was also focused on making me comfortable and getting settled in to the room. After we got a great new nurse at shift change a short time later Barbara switched gears to help me with the more intense transition period, rocking my hips, getting me juice, helping my husband and I both stay calm and focused, and helping the medical staff hold a monitor in place and give me oxygen. The few times my breathing began to speed up she was there to bring me back to deep breaths.
My plan was to have an unmediated delivery and Barbara was a huge part of achieving that goal. While things did get very intense, I never once felt I needed to ask for pain medication. However, if I had I know Barbara would have provided the support I needed based on having been a key part of developing my birth plan and knowing my wishes.
After 5 hours in the hospital our baby was born. During a brief NICU check Barbara stayed by my side as my husband stood by the bassinet. She stayed to make sure we were all settled and had everything we needed.
Happily, we just hired her to participate in the birth of our second child this fall.
